Super Cool Zero Point Tool
Hello Harp Techs,
In previous videos and blogs, I have commented that setting the Zero Point--the gap located at the rivet end of the reed--is just as important as setting the proper gap on the free end of the reed.
I don’t think it would be a stretch to assert, that being able to consistently set the perfect Zero Point would differentiate you a Master Harp Tech-Customizer within our community of Harp Techs.
Sometimes, on the bench, our enthusiasm gets the best of us, and we drop the Zero Point lower into the slot than is necessary. Here is a tool to help you correct your Zero Point setting:
Start with a .002” stainless steel feeler gauge (available at all automotive parts stores).
Trim the radius from the feeler gauge with shears.
Now you have a 90 degree edge
Hook and slide the feeler gauge all the way back until it stops at the rivet pad
Using your fingernail, press the reed down into the slot to reset the reed profile. Keep checking until you are satisfied with both the Zero Point gap and free end gap.
This is what it looks like on the opposite side. Notice how the feeler gauge strip perfectly blocks up the reed by .002”.
