David's Tip of the Day: A Blues Harmonica Player's Journey - Final

David Barrett Admin's picture

This journey of a musician in an improvised music style is very representative of the levels of awareness students go through in their path to mastery of the blues harmonica. I love the metaphor, "When you do, come back again. We'll be around.” The idea that the music will be there for the student to play once they’ve matured enough to approach it is wonderful. Not only do I see my students' journey in this story, I see mine. With all the joy that came from musical breakthroughs, there were always higher levels of awareness that showed my how much more I had to learn before I become competent. And competent in what?... specific areas... there are so many facets of music that it truly is a life-long journey of discovery. Pretty exciting really... there's always something out there to make us better... it's just up to us to get on the path of discovery and be patient enough for those levels of awareness to reveal themselves to us.
