David's Tip of the Day: Rocker, Chorus 1 (AAA Chorus Form) by Little Walter

Each day I’ll talk about one chorus of Rocker. This opening chorus (head) is what really brings the listener into the instrumental. Using an AAA Chorus Form helps to solidify the theme in the listener’s mind. The upbeat pulls (many fail to notice them at this speed) and 2 draw bends will take some time to play at this tempo. Though Little Walter tongue blocked this chorus, if you’re a pucker player you can play this passage using the “pucker-pull” for the upbeat chords. This is performed by lowering your bottom lip slightly (and moving your jaw slightly left) to allow the chord (1 and 2 draw) to sound on the upbeat (using a “Ta” articulation to simulate the “pluck” of the tongue block pull). For the downbeat single-note (2 draw in this case), with a separate breath from the pucker-pull “swoop” your lips down in size from two holes (1 and 2 draw) to one to simulate the sound of the slap. Try this slowly and build up to the song’s full tempo as your skill allows.
