David's Tip of the Day: Travel Set of Harmonicas

David Barrett Admin's picture

For a travel set of harmonica, five keys of harmonica will take care of the job in most situations... G, A, B-flat, C and D.

G - 1st Position = G / 2nd Position = D / 3rd Position = A
A - 1st Position = A / 2nd Position = E / 3rd Position = B
B-flat - 1st Position = B-flat / 2nd Position = F / 3rd Position = C
C - 1st Position = C / 2nd Position = G / 3rd Position = D
D - 1st Position = D / 2nd Position = A / 3rd Position = E

Referencing all of the keys available in music... A, B-flat, B, C, D-flat, D, E-flat, E, F, G-flat, G, A-flat... only D-flat, E-flat, G-flat and A-flat are not covered with these keys of harps.

My pouch holes seven harmonicas, so I also include the A-flat harmonica and Low-F. I love playing my A-flat harmonica in 3rd Position, key of B-flat and the Low-F harmonica is a great choice for songs in C where you want to play in 2nd Position.

A-flat - 1st Position = A-flat / 2nd Position = E-flat / 3rd Position = B-flat
Low-F - 1st Position = F / 2nd Position = C / 3rd Position = G

With those seven harps, only the key of D-flat (C#) and G-flat (F#) are not covered... which are very rare keys.

So, that's my set of harps... just thought I would share that with you since I'm jet-lagged in Trossingen right now and they're sitting right in front of me... calling my name! I wouldn't dare play them though... Joe Filisko is in the room to the right of me and Steve Baker to the left... I doubt they would like a 5am Hohner wake-up call.
