Mic Shell Observation
For years i have been using the same EV605 shell, fitted with a 99B86 CM. I just obtained a JT30 with a 99H86 CM, and have been comparing the 2.
the element in the EV is definitely 'hotter'; by which i mean louder, more prone to feedback, bigger bottom, which tends to overwhelm the mids, distorts more readily. the JT30 is much sweeter, more musical.
Elements vary. I've heard it said often, so there is no surprise there.
the eye-opener for me was the difference in the shells. With the EV i can play 1-handed and sure, there is some difference in the tone, but it is nowhere near as marked as with the JT30 shell. there is a huge variation in tone on the JT30 depending on how i cup it. i thought my mic technique was probably poor based on the EV experience where i couldnt seem to make much difference to it...some difference but not as much as i expected...
maybe its just that the element in the EV is so hot anyway, but i think its maybe because the shell is small, so even holding it one-handed it is still quite enclosed.
anyway..just sharing...
