Roly Platt Harp Wah
Anyone else tried one of these? I was intrigued, so just got one (from Rockin' Ron's Music) the other day. It's a fun addition to my collection of home grown tin cans (including an "official" Ortega Chili can just like the one Joe Filisko uses!).
With just a few minutes of getting used to it, I took it to a local blues club jam yesterday, and jumped on stage with it when the jam host and leader of the house band called me up during the house band's opening set, to do vocal and harp for one tune the house band had been working up. No time to set up my amp, etc., so I just used the Harp Wah into the vocal mic. It worked fine, but it took a bit of getting used to, particularly hearing myself, after regularly using my amp as a monitor (mic'd or DI'd into the house system), and my favorite harp mic. I couldn't quite hear myself the same way, and the Harp Wah wasn't 100% comfortable in my hands. So more time with it needed; however, the other musicians in the crowd told me they though it sounded very cool.
During a break, another harmonica player who's a ton better than I am asked to try it out, and proceeded to do train stuff with great sound effects from the Harp Wah.
For a look and listen to what Platt himself can do with his invention, check out https://www.harmonicamute.com/ Sometime within my next 10,000 hours of practice I hope to be able to do a few of these things!
