Video Tip 8 - Unchain My Heart
Today's tip comes from the eighth song of my concert set at Steve Baker's Harmonica Masters Workshop.
"Unchain My Heart" is in Am and is played on the G Harmonica in 3rd Position.

Your tip...
#1 - Notice at 1:49 when the guitarist (Steve) takes a solo I stop playing. This is a great way to give the new soloist sonic space. If the solo were multiple choruses you could enter the second chorus and play softly... if there were a third chorus you would play stronger, helping the soloist to build in intensity.
#2 - I hadn't played this song before that night. I asked if there were a song Gaz (bass player/singer) could sing to fill out the set and he pulled this one out. I tried it once at rehearsal, just trying to keep up and hear the form and such, and knew I needed to dial the song in a bit more before performing it. I pulled Gaz and Steve aside while we were waiting for the sound engineer to be ready for sound check and asked him what the chords were (I, IV, V, other, etc.) and where they were in rhythm (how long each chord was held) and then had them hum the two rhythmic pieces in the song... the opening lick (4 5 6+ 5 4 4+ 4) and the break lick (6 6 6). Getting this essential information helped me to play more confidently.
