WEEKLY MORSEL: VELCRO IS YOUR FRIEND!
To "get under foot" can be an uncomfortable and annoying predicament to experience.
For LORD MICROPHONE, allowing your connecting cables to get under foot can be A) embarrassing; B) damaging; C) costly; D) all of the above.
Going wireless is one way to avoid this dilemma -while trading for another set of problematics. How about a cheap fix for those of us tethered to the hard-wired harpmic? I'll pass along a couple methods...
1) Once on-station and in playing position, pull a short length of your mic's cable through one of your belt loops, preferably located to your side or back. The benefits are: It keeps the slack of the cable closer to you while raising it off the floor; acts as a shock absorber should errant feet step on your cable, as the loop will release long before your mic would be pulled from your hands. Side benefit: You could actually work a pants-dropping vaudeville gag into your act by simply planning the misstep and your cable's length. No? OK...
2) Get yourself some double-faced VELCRO (hooks on one side, loops on the other) and cut it into practical lengths (4", 6", 9"). Aside from being a stress-reduced method of winding & storing cables, the stuff can serve as a cable elevator and safety shock absorber: Use rings of VELCRO as cable guides to and from and over gear, up mic stands, -and as that break-away component on your belt loop guarding against unwanted foot traffic. IT'S CHEAP! IT WORKS!
