2 draw tongue blocked sounds much thinner as opposed to 2 draw when I pucker.
Hi David,
I have been studying blues harp for about 7 months now. I have been mostly puckering but trying to switch to tongue block now.
The biggest issue I have so far tongue blocking (besides the bends :) ) is that I cant get that 2 draw to sound the same way as opposed ot when I am puckering.
I saw the 2 draw FAQ and yes I understand it is connected to my tongue not being "out of the way" enough, but well it really is not because I am tongue blocking now.
Can you please give me any advice how can I achieve the same (or close enough) thickness of the 2 draw like when puckering?
Many thanks in advance!
Great, I'm glad that helped.
Also from pucker to tongue-block - my experience was similar and the solution was exactly what Dave said. At first, my tongue for the 2-hole was too far right, so the 2-hole was partially blocked - weak and sometimes unintentionally bent. Aiming for the wood on the 2-hole saved my bacon. After all, you only have one hole to block.
Yeah, aim for the wood is the one of the best tips for hole 2 draw!
Hello batsaali. When speaking of the tongue being out of the way, I’m speaking of the unintentional humping of the tongue in the middle and/or back. This is your focus. Also, when placing your tongue on the face of the harmonica, aim for the wood of the comb to the left of hole 1. Even though you’re not aiming to block the 1, the right side of the tongue is blocking hole 1 for you. If you aim for hole 1, you’re liable to block some of hole 2 (constriction of a hole can also cause unwanted bending). Focus on the middle/back of the tongue being lowered, and tongue placement, for a bit and let me know how you progress.
