Acoustic Recording
I've got mics (as you well know) for playing and recording with hand held mics. In trying to record acoustic playing, I'm finding I have to get so close to the mic for it to pick up the harp, that it's awkward, especially when playing from music on a stand. I've got an ElectroVoice RE10 that I use with the gain on the AudioBox up full. Any further than 4 -5" away and it is really faint on the Garage Band recordings. Any recommendations that would pick up the harp from10 - 12" away. I guess I'm looking for more sensitivoty in a mic.
The Ultimate barrel doesn't taper like a standard SM57 or 58 - consequently it doesn't fit in the mic clip made for those mics. Good news though - the Shure wireless mics are the same diameter as the Ultimate mics and don't taper either. Shure makes a mic clip model WA371 that is an excellent and secure fit. I have them for $14.95 if you need one.
HEY IF IT WORKS FOR YOU THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS, HANK.
IN THE PIC I'M LOOKING AT OF THAT CLIP (https://www.directproaudio.com/product.cfm?directid=68377) IT LOOKS LIKE IT WOULD BE HARD TO MANEUVER PAST THE VOLUME CONTROL
Hi, Hank
Studio recording is not my area of expertise - but mics like you're using were definitely used in studios. I don't think today's mics differ that much in output, though some are more sensitive - the Beta 57 and Beta 58 are more sensitive than their non-Beta alternates - and ribbon mics are more sensitive yet. Still I think the mics you have should be more than adequate. I wonder if the problem is not enough gain on the AudioBox - and wonder if you might be able to help that by running through an outboard mic preamp first?
And just to be sure - you're not going into the AudioBox from the RE10 with an XLR to 1/4" cable, are you? If so - THAT is your problem.
