Alternative Hohner Cover Plates
Hi Kinya
I've been watching your tuning videos recently and find them very interesting and easy to follow. I wanted to ask you if you know of any way that I could make the cover plates of my Hohner Crossover harmonica more comfortable to hold? I find the top left hand corner of the lip digs into my hand. Would the Rocket plates fit do you know? Would have to drill a couple of extra holes.
Thanks
Joel

Hello. If you are here, then you can go a little farther and check out "The Big Cover Up", Episode 5 from our new HARPSMITH Bench video series. Here I demonstrate the numerous strategies for swaping and modifying cover plates.

Do you use that same driver on the reed plate bolts Kinya?
Yes. When using the modern Hohner cover plate "binding post" type fastener, I recommend using the Wiha Pozi drive screwdriver. Normal Philips type screwdrivers will strip your fastener. Model 262/PZ 1x60 is a good choice.

Hi Joel, thanx for joining us.
Ha--this was going to be one of my topics for the new HARPSMITH Bench feature. I am a HUGE advocate of swapping cover plates, specifically, for modifying the voicing of the harmonica. For comfort reasons--you bet!
All Hohner "Marine Band" and "Progressive" harmonica models have interchangeable cover plates. No drilling necessary. Your Rocket only requires two cover plate fasteners, compared to the four found on your Crossover.
TO PREVENT STRIPPING OF THE FASTENER HEADS, MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO USE A WIHA 262/PZ 1X60 SCREWDRIVER
You can thank me later ;o)
