Am I tone deaf?
Dr. Dave, I've always had a problem choosing the key of a song, so I was thrilled when you posted the "how to" section during the intermeadiate lessons with Ryan. So I watched them a couple times took note and the first song I tried was Carey Bell "lonesome stranger"
Here's what happened:
I liked Method 3 so I used my "C" harp played each note and determined that "D" matched best so in 2nd position that would be a "G" harp. I played along to it and I thought it sounded pretty good, I needed work on matching the song but it seemed I was matching it ok.
To check myself I went to your page were you have the transcriptions with Lance. Well it says it's an "Am" played on "D"? I can't dispute that because it sounds allot better and everything is there.
Before I even tried this method I thought the song was "E" played on an "A" which in a bacward way matches the other thing you said about "if it doesnt sound good in 2nd then try the 5th" in method 2.
2 questions:
Am I deaf or just dumb?
Why is it I see songs in 2nd position on "D" harp listed as key of "A" and some key of "Am", maybe this is covered in the music theroy? I haven't gotten too far in those yet.
Thanks for any light you can shed I'll keep workig on it.
This is no doubt a challenge and it just takes a lot of experimenting and as time goes on you get better and better at it... there is no "wrong" answer in this case... note the commonality here...
G Harp - Can play in A 3rd Position
A Harp - Can play in A 1st Position
D Harp - Can play in A 2nd Position
So, each of the harps you experiment with works for playing this song! Of course only one is the correct answer if you're trying to match what the harp player is doing... but again that's experimenting... as you become good at 2nd, 3rd and 1st Positions, you'll be able to more quickly hear which position they're playing in by hearing the tell-tale sounds of a given position.
keep your head up... I get it wrong every now and again too!
