I'll say that I am glad to be back on the site with a new commitement to "deliberate practice"
my question: in playing "Leaning on the everlasting arms" first position A flat Golden Meloidy, several times go from 4 blow straight to 3" bend. I can get the right pitch most of the time but on recording and playback it's always cluncky and rough. is it just a matter pf practice in smoothing that out or some tip pr trick to get from 4 blow to 3"?

R3Dz asks what Stage 5 bends are.
Stage 4 is being able to go back and forth between a bent note and something else that isn't a bend. For instance between 3D'' and 3B (per the query that started this thread), or 3D" and unbent 2D. To do this well, you have to be able to start and stop cold and accurately on a bent note, which you can master through the first three stages.
Stage 5 is being able to go from a bend in one hole to a bend in another hole. For instance, if you try and outline the V chord in second position, you could go:
1D -> 2D' -> 3D" - 4B
For example, Little Walter does this behind Muddy Waters on the original recording of Long Distance Call.
oh okay, that makes sense. I was familiar with a bend to natural to bend and back and forth as it's common in a few songs I'm practicing ( little walter's boogie or diggin my potato) I didn't really know of any example songs going from bend to a different bend hole. I'll go hunting for that song so I can take a listen.

I've indentified five stags of bending ability.
You're describing a Stage 4 bend, which is going between a bent note and an unbent note that isn't the same note, such as
You need to be able to land on the bent note cold - without bending down to it, and, in this case, coming from a blow note in another hole.
To get good at this, it helps to work on Stage Three: starting that bend cold, all by itself, out of the blue. Then work on alternating it with the other note.
To prepare that cold start, work on Stage Two: bending down to the note, stopping your breathing *without* releasing the bend, then starting the breath flow again and starting directly on the bend. Essentially, you're keeping the bending machinery dialed in and just turning the breath flow on and off.
