Bending using different harmonica
Hello Winslow,
I learned to bend with the Hohner Marine Band. Recently, I got the Yonberg D2 Typhoon and it is like I never even bent before. After several days of practicing I still can't bend.
Both harmonicas are in the Kay of A .Yonberg has steel reeds vs bronse reeds of the Marine Band. Yonberg is also a well airtight harmonica whichi thought should help in bending.
The question is, how much influence does it make a diferent brand and whether it is worth fighting the new harmonica and is better to stick the one that works?
Have you ever tried the Yonberg harmonicas?
Thank you.
Best,
Anton
Hi, Anton.
It can be frustrating to encounter a situation like this.
Two harps in the same key should bend equally well and with the same technique. My information is that Yonberg uses Seydel reeds, and I have Seydel steel reeded harps that bend just fine. I've neer played a Yonberg.
The simpe answer is to just stay with what works. But I know that a Yonberg custom is not inexpensive, so Im sure you hate to purchase it and then not use it.
I'm wondering whether there might have been some error in asssembly that could have caused the experience you're having with the Yonberg. If screws fastening the reedplates are too tight or too loose, leakage can result, and this can make bending harder. You might get in touch with Yonberg to check on any possible problems with the harmonica.
It may also be that if your ony harmonica until now has been a single Marine Band (I'm not sure whether that's true), you may have to adapt your technique to different models and to different keys. One thing to try would be another Marine Band in a different key, such as C or D, and adapting your bending abilities to that key.
