Breath Management
Hi David, been really enjoying the LoA so far since getting into harmonica recently! Well thought out, easy to follow, and professional looking. I have a quick question regarding breath management.
In e.g. Example 1.11 of Solo Harmonica Study 1, the breathing pattern is such that you spend much more time drawing than blowing. As a beginner, I'm having trouble with so much inhaling and not feeling like I have the time or opportunity to exhale -- even when playing rather softly the lack of exhaling seems to catch up to me.
What advice would you have for better managing my breathing in cases like this, or similarly having a shortness of breath on reversed passages?
Thanks for your time and advice!
Thank you JMooli, I'm glad you're enjoying the site, and your studies. That is no doubt a difficult passage to play. Also, controlling the nose can be a good challenge as well. The key is in making sure your nose is closed for your draw notes, and open, in this case, for your blow notes. I have exercises here https://www.bluesharmonica.com/faq, clicking on the link titled, "I run out of breath so easily!" Give the exercises a try, and some time with practice, and check back in with me in a couple of weeks on how your practice is going.
