Buddy Greene
I was listening to accompany study 1 and Buddy Greene mentioned another player that influenced him. Could you give me his name i was not able to get the name?
Thanks
I might be mistaken, but I think Buddy Greene mentions Charlie McCoy several times during his interview (the section about bending?). He has also played and recorded with Charlie and I think Buddy's style is closer to Charlie McCoy's than to Jerry Portnoy's.
Both Charlie and Jerry are masters of the harmonica and great players to listen to, each in their style (Charlie mainly country, Jerry blues with some jazzy songs), be sure to check both of them! :)
I've re-watched the "Introduction & Early Years" video and this is the list of artists Buddy mentions:
- John Lennon (when he was 10)
- Thom Doucet playing with the Allman Brothers, about 10 years later
- Rolling Stones (in passing)
- Sonny Terry (he says he went to concerts by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee in Atlanta and he couldn't get over Sonny's harp work, but he didn't know how to play like him)
- Little Walter
- The "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with Jimmy Fadden on harp (more country/bluegrass style)
- Charlie McCoy, in the same country who he says he bought every record of and he became a devotee of for 10 years. It's relevant he liked (and later copied, though he doesn't say it) his precise bending ability and melodic approach to the harp
- After those 10 years, he discovered Paul Butterfield, Norton Buffalo and others.
- Marc Graham and David Rice (1st position players)
So there you have it, that's quite a list to listen to :D
I don't think he mentions Jerry Portnoy. Still a legend, though :)
I missed the "accompaniment" part, sorry. This thread got me hooked again on the Buddy Greene interview and while rewatching it, on the accompaniment one he mentions Jerry Portnoy right on. That's when I realized I had missed you were asking about the accompaniment clip, my bad. =)
The first person Greene mentions in the clip is Jerry Portnoy. Is that who you're asking about? David has a fairly recent interview with Portnoy up in the New Interviews section, and it's a great one. We most recently heard and met Portnoy at Mark Hummel's Blowout show in Roseville CA early last year. Portnoy is not only a true master, but all-round really nice guy, to boot.
