C Scales 2 Draw vs 3 Blow
David, I am working on the C Major scale. At the bottom of page 1 of the pdf hand out, Movement Exercies - Essential Scales, there is a note that states "Tip: Try to understand why 2 draw (G) is used in some scales and 3+ (G) in others".
I do not understand, please explain. While working in the C Major Scale I find it easier to use 3+ in lieu of 2 draw. Am I setting myself up for difficulty down the road. Thanks.
I'm starting to figure this out.
The 3+ gives you the option of slaps, which sound really nice.
The 2 draw can be bent for that nice bluesy tone.
Yes, if you're going to play F after G, then playing the 2 draw generally makes sense. The 3+ sounds nice with slaps, though you can also slap the 2 draw (and we do).
No, you just want to be aware that there is an option. For that specific scale I prefer the use of the 2 draw… this makes my pattern in the middle of the scale 2" 2 3" 3… and is easier for me to remember. Some players also like the 2 draw in this case when descending… it can be challenging to go from 3+ to 2", changing from a blow to a draw and a bend at the same time. In the end, it's about experimenting and listening for what works best for you.
P.S., try the opening lick to "Blues Creapin' Over Me" in Accompaniment Study 3, this is a clear example of where the 3+ is a better choice.
