Can opening up a harmonica for cleaning make it less air tight?
Hi Kinya!
I was using a Hohner harp under 20 bucks (Silver Star) until now when I finally saved up enough to buy my first ever pro grade harmonica, a Crossover in A. It is new so far, and it is so much more air tight, especially compared to my previous harp that I am simply in love! But now I have a conundrum. I used to completely dissemble my old harp and clean everything i.e. covers, reed plates, comb, but now I am a little scared that if I do the same with my Crossover, I may end up losing the air tightness it has by disturbing the company fittings. How genuine is my fear and what steps should I take to ensure continuous air tight playing?
Thank you.
Hello James, welcome aboard!
Congratulations on your purchase of the Hohner Crossover--it is a terrific harmonica. When compared to your other harmonica, you will find it infinitely better in it's construction, playability and tone. The Silver Star harmonica is apart of Hohner's entry level line of harmonicas. The comb and cover plates are manufactured at Hohner's China factory--along with the aluminum reed plates. Ironically, I find these "beginner" harmonicas extremely difficult to play, making it hard for an eager harmonica player to learn proper bending techniques.
I would recommend not doing the 100,000 mile tune up on your Crossover-until it is really required (e.g. tuning and gapping the reeds).
