Changing from lipping to tongue-blocking
First off I'd like to thank David and all the super musicians for this wonderful platform.
Finally I have a good feeling about what I am learning about the blues on the harp.
I started (trying) to play the blues harp just before my fiftieth birthday, which is now almost three years ago. I'm actually fairly good with the lipping of single notes, and fairly apt at the octaves, flutters, and stuff.
For the first time, due to David's insistance on using the tongue-blocking technique from the beginning class on, I am trying to change over to doing this.... And I suck! (No pun intended.)
Precision has all gone to shot, and I fumble about with my tongue on the harp like a virgin boy with a cougar.
I know that it can only be a matter of time until I start getting the hang of things, and that I am now back at the starting line with regards to my playing, but I need to impress upon all other newbies (like me) that I need to get through this if I aim to be anywhere near as good as the great musicians on this site.
I am open to any and all hints and help regarding practicing techniques, or anything that might help me get my tongue wrapped around this blocking business (even open to Witch Craft and Sourcery :-) ).
I practice between 1 and 3 hours a day, depending on my other commitments.
Otherwise, this platform, well, it is exciting!
David, thanks again.

I started out the same way. Check out my older post on tongue blocking frustrations from lip pursing players. It is located in the Ask Dave Barrett forum. I think the posts there may provide help and inspiration. I eventually forced myself to pick up tongue blocking after some resistance. I now switch back and forth based on what works for me. I'm glad I stuck with it. I have much a broader range of techniques since I can do both now.
