Chicago
Hi David,
I will be in chicago on Thursday until Satuday and was wondering if you had any recommendations on places to listen to some classic Chicago blues harp. I was wondering as well if there were any harp 'destinations" in chicago that I should check out while I'm there.
Thanks.
Mike
I asked Mark and he said, "Buddy Guy's (obviously), B.L.U.E.S (on Halstead St.), Kingston Mines (right accross the street), SmokeDaddies BBQ, Rosa's, Billy Branch's Jam at Artis's Lounge on Monday nights."
I asked my friend John and he says,"If I were going to Chicago I would try and see James Conway: http://www.jamesconway.net/ but it appears he will be out of town that week. Also, Buzz Krantz used to have a web site as he played pretty regular and may have even run a jam but I can't seem to find his site any more. I've seen some really good music at Rosa's - http://www.rosaslounge.com/ and Buddy Guy's - http://www.buddyguy.com/ . It looks like Sugar Blue is playing at Buddy Guy's a week from this Friday. If your student were to google Chicago Blues Jams, I bet something would come up or if he were to email Harp-L.
I'm not much of a museum person but I recommend the Chicago Art Institute of Chicago in Millennium Park - http://www.artic.edu/aic/ and/or the Museum of Science and Industry. The Kapoor Sculpture, located near the center of Millennium Park, is a 66-foot long 33-foot high elliptical sculpture inspired by liquid mercury which is definitely worth checking out. Also, there are walking architectural downtown that are reasonably priced and interesting. Chicago is a cool city to visit."
Highway Rickey says, "Our www.youmissedmonday.com Filisko school class website is about a good an event harmonica resource you look at for the Chicago area. Live harp and jam sessions listed."
I wish I could help, but every time I've been to Chicago it's been for a workshop or a gig and I was in and out. Ask this in the general forum, I'm sure there's players on the site that live in in IL. Best wishes on your trip!
