CM & CR mics take 2
G'day, interested in opinions: I am wondering if there is much point having more than 1 mic of this type. i have a nice EV605 with a 99B86. i'm really happy with it.
my question is, is there any point having say a jt-30/shure 520/turner challenger...with a 99a86, or 99h86 etc...or will it just be pretty much the same signal coming out of a different shell...
rather than picking up another CM/CR mic, would i be better off getting work done on my sm58 (such as blowsmeaway's "ultimate" mod) to make it more stage friendly and give me more versatility.
also, do you know of anyone in Australia doing quality work on mics? postage across the pacific is quite a tax...
cheers,
Dave
Hi, Dave
There are many differences among CR's and CM's - they do not all sound alike. Even among those with the same model designation, there are variances. Still, if you only own one mic, I would start expanding your collection with something more different. For functionality it is hard to beat the Ultimate 57. If you're attracted to vintage stuff for the sake of the cool factor, there is a lot to choose from there too.
But once you have some variety to choose from, it can be really nice to buy and trade CR and CM-based mics or elements. One in every 50 or so is truly special - and again, every one is a little different.
The 58 is cleaner, partly by its nature and partly because it is harder to achieve a good cup with it. From my perspective, the 58 is a great mic if your amp is already dirty by itself - typical of small vintage amps. I have several customers who use it this way. Otherwise it is easier to get the 57 to go dirtier. It still cleans up nicely, but its pickup pattern when mounted in a stand is narrower, making it a little less flexible for vocals or acoustic work. I like the Ultimate 58 as a combination vocal/acoustic harp mic, and the 57 as a blues mic.
ok, i watched a couple of the mic videos...think i probably have the answers i was looking for now.
