Coating old nickel plated cover plates
I have two Marine Bands I purchased in 1969 and two pre-MS Blues Harps purchased in 1977. I have installed machine screws and sealed and flattened the combs and flattened the draw reed plates. These harmonicas play really well. The cover plates polish well. However, they tarnish very quickly after playing them. These are the old nickel plated cover plates. I would like to keep them rather than installing new cover plates.
What about spraying them with Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic?
Hello Larry
I've not have not opportunity to try the MAAS metal polish, but I can verify the SIMICHROME paste is crazy good!

Hello LFS
For me I found the typical off the shelf coatings on my old cover plates to be uncomfortable, not providing me with the "slip and slide" I enjoy. Coatings are particularly lacking when up against players with extra sharp eye teeth (read vampires) as they will stratch the heck out of your cover plates.
I lean more towards powdered coated finishes and chrome refinishing.
In the meantime, nothing works better than http: SIMICHROME metal polish available everywhere in cyber space <www.simichrome-polish.com>
