crossover reeds
After spending many years with Special 20's, Marine Band, and Rockets: I recently (6 months ago) purchased a Crossover. While removing the covers to do a cleaning I noticed how small the reed retaining screws/rivets are. My senior years, and eyesight while using a magnifier is not the best. I believe its a very fine screw holding the reeds but I dont want to damage the head should I need to ever replace a reed.
Do you have the sizing of the screw head? Also, should I rework a head is there a prefered method i.e. drill, ream out the hole and retap for larger screw? I found suggestions for other models but am struggling to find the methodology of a Crossover?
Is there one common chart of suggested workmanship by model?
Thanks as always.,
Inky
Hello Inky, good to hear from you.
All HOHNER Marine Band, including the Marine Band 1896, Marine Band Deluxe, Marine Band Crossover, Marine Band Thunderbird have identical reeds and are attached to the reed plate with rivets--not screws.
All HOHNER Progressive Models, including: Special 20, Rocket, AMP, Rocket Low have identical reeds attached with rivets--not screws and swappable reed plates.
Although the Golden Melody is considered part of the Progressive Model and the reeds are also attached with rivets, the reed plate is unique to the Golden Melody comb and not swappable with other Progressive combs.
