Hi David,
I am a little tentative on getting a mic and amp initially especially because the equipment you speak of is not available easily here. Would it hamper my learning if I were to stick to acoustic playing for a while before I go the amp way?

No, it will not hamper you to play acoustic (non-amplified). Playing amplified is just one presentation of playing the harmonica. It would be a good idea to pick up an amp and mic (doesn't need to be expensive) prior to starting to play out... jam sessions or with buddies and such. This way you're not thrown off from having to play through an amp the first time. You can also just play through the PA System (in front of a vocal mic), so a harp player can go their entire career not needing to play through an amplifier... Rice Miller did it. If you LOVE the amplified sound, then save your pennies and get one when you can afford it. If the amplified sound does't excite you, then no big deal, don't play amplified. Play what you like.
