You can also explore playing the scales on the chords (For example... you're in 2nd Position on a C Harmonica = Key of G... use G blues scale for I7, C blues scale for IV7, and D blues scale for V7).
In regards to your piano player friend, you don't need to change blues scales, you change harmonicas. If the band is in Eb, then yes, you would just play your Ab harmonica in 2nd position.
