Hi Fritz,
Can you tell me about these microphones? Do they sound simular?
Which one of these 2 are more popular with Harp players? How would these compare
with a SM-57? What years were these made? Any idea what these range in price used?

Hello 528 HEMI,
ELECTRO-VOICE has been in the game a long, long time. As with most products, consumers develop opinions and dependencies based on their own particular predilections. With harp players you can count on a high degree of opinion regarding harps, amps, and certainly microphones. The EV 630, RE10, and SHURE SM57 all share the common denominator of being "Dynamic" -or "moving coil" microphones. Dynamics exhibit what I've called "pop" as their transient response is fast, very horn-like. They've each found devotees among the players of amplified harmonica as well. The RE10 and SM57 are both smaller-format dynamics designed for hand use or stand mounting by way of an adaptor clip. They all sound fairly realistic when utilized for their more common applications (voice and instrument pick-up) and the SM57 and RE10 are in common use today in both sound reinforcement and studio applications. The 630 differs as it's a stand-mount design with tilt/adjustment capability. As with many of the EV mics from this design school, the 630 has A LOTTA metal in its casing. I call it "THE POTATO" due to the proportions of its capsule enclosure. My personal opinion is that the 630 doesn't rank very highly on the "WORKABILITY" scale despite its solid dynamic response, certainly not nearly as high as the RE10 or SM57. The 630 CAN be modified for greater ease of handling while preserving its inherent sound signature. It just takes time, ambition, know-how, $$$, and the desire to experiment. -Or would you like to try for what's behind the curtain? -Fritz
