Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Amp
I've had a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe guitar amp for about 18 years. I want to make it more harmonica friendly. Currently, i can set the volume to 1 maybe 1.5 before feedback becomes a problem. It has a lot of settings, including reverb, that I can play with to adjust tone. Any thoughts on how to eliminate or significantly reduce the feedback?
Amp has 2 6L6GC/5881 Power Tubes and 3 12AX7A pre-amp tubes.
This won't be much help but, I played through a HRD probably 15 year old amp last week and it worked great I didnt touch any knobs the guitar player did adjustment while I played got it set and that amp rocked ! Almost too loud for the band I had very little feedback & I controled that with the VC on a Bulletini mic. I was very surprised at how good that sounded It is a guitar players amp so probably same tubes as what you have. I think if you just fiddle with it it will work real well. I asked the guy how high volume level was and He said around 4-5 Good Luck

What mic are you using and where are you standing?
The Hod Rod Deluxe is a 40 Watt amp. If you are practicing in a small room -- especially standing in front of it -- it doesn't take much to produce feedback with a mic. Standing behind it can help, or use a longer cable to get away at least.
The Hod Rod Deluxe is mostly solid state in spite of the five tubes, so modifying the circuit would be tough. You might swap the 12AX7 preamp tubes for 12AT7 ones. The 12AT7 tubes have a bit less gain, so that can help.
You can look at anti-feedback pedals like the Lone Wolf Harp Shield ( https://www.lonewolfblues.com/shield.html ). Those can sometimes help.
Other steps to try would be to lower the drive pot, turn up the bass, and lower the treble (which you should do for a harp anyway). Lastly, you could use an EQ pedal to lower the frequencies that are causing the feedback.
