First mic

Hi Mr. Hasenpusch.
I now you have hear this question before, but I am looking for my first mic.
I don't swim in money, so it has to be a good but cheap piece of equipment.
What do you thing about the standard shure green bullet 520dx just out of the box?
Do you think I have to invest more?
Greetings SergioJL,
And welcome to the mythically confounding world of amplified harp. As for your 'FIRST MIC' purchase, the questions I would ask are: What sort of sound are you looking for; what sort of amp will you be playing through; what size mic will your hands accommodate and be comfortable with? This last one's important as your ability to 'CUP' the mic will greatly affect your resulting sound/tone. Having said all that, I'll say this: Rarely have I run into a novice amplified player whose hands lend themselves to the size of the 520 family of 'GREEN BULLET' mics. Unless you have bigger than average hands the learning curve will be steeper with a proportionately larger mic. ALSO, the 520DX has a large format dynamic element in place of the old Controlled-Magnetic elements that helped to define the sound of amplified harp and added to the 'GREEN BULLET' legend. The two yield different sonic signatures. The notorious weakness in the 520's design is the hard-wired non-detachable cable. Repairs are inevitable.
SO, what to do? First, get your hands around as many candidates as you can find, establish a comfortable size and fit, then consider the sound-producing innards of the mic. Once you find the physical package that suits you, get back in touch to discuss your sonic objectives.
