Gary's Blues - 3rd Chorus
Hi David.
I've been really putting a concerted effort into tongue blocking and am now able to do most draw bends while tongue blocking. I am noticing, however, in the second bar when you get the 4' 3 2 3+ 3+ run I just can't move quick enough with the tongue block. I end up with a crappy bend on the 4' and a chord for the 3 and sometimes the 2. Is this an example when you might switch to a pucker embouchure for parts of the run and then back to tongue blocking?
Are you playing the entire arrangement tongue blocked or do you switch it up?
Thanks for your insight.
J.D.
Oh yah, it's just reps, you'll get it. Check out that "Creeper" lick, it's killer, and is the first time I worked on TB bending, since you have to, to play that lick. When you're done with "Gary's Blues" as a reward I'll be happy to share my transcription of it with you :-)
The speed of that bend is a challenge, and is part of the focus of that lesson. You'll notice there is not much bending in this song, with the emphasis on the 4'. Stay in a TB, you'll get it. Make up an exercise, like 4 4' 3, starting slowly and with time picking up the speed. Do this every day for two weeks and you'll have it. This work on the 4' in a TB will prepare you for great licks, such as the Rice Miller lick I show in Ryan's latest lesson and licks like the hook in "Cotton's Creeper."
