Hi Winslow,
On most GH Smith album covers he's holding a giant long harmonica. Any idea what this is?

Haha. Interesting bit of trivia. Thank you. I'm reffering to the CD cover for Arkansas Trap, Blowin' The Blues, Oopin' Doopin' Blues Harp, and Teardrops Are Falling. They all look like the same harmonica to me.

Sometimes it's a 16-hole chromatic, but that really long, strange-looking one is a Polyphonia No. 7.
The Polyphonia No. 7 is an all-blow harmonica that goes down to a D nearly an octave lower than the lowest note in a 64. Each hole is pitched one semitone higher than the last as you move from left to right.
I've never heard Smith play one on a record (but then I haven't heard everything he did). The photos are probably a result of the "use the biggest harmonica you can find in the photo" syndrome.
