Having trouble holding Harmonica
I watched your Video and Mr. Filisko's video I don't know how many times but still can't seem to get my hands in the right position. I see that your wrist aren't bent and the Harmonica stays stright with your elbows tucked. I like Mr. Filisko's way but yet again I cannot get my other hand around to close it off.
I am putting this in this forum because you guys make it look so easy, even your students make it look easy. I don't want bad form to start, I am starting out as an older player as it is.
If you or Mr. Filisko have any tips I would gladly take them. I know that in his video Mr. Filisko said don't worry about the other hand until you are comfortable and relaxed with one hand.
Guess it will just take time.
Thank you again for your time.
Great, this helps a lot.
First off, I don't think it's a problem the way you're holding it now. At the end, you play with your head slightly tilted to your left to compensate for the harmonica not being horizontal. This is totally fine, and very common for players to do this. I commonly play with my head (as do most players) tilted to the left.
I would say we can stop here, but if you want to have the harp more horizontal, the key is pushing the thumb of your left hand outwards, towards your right hand. As the thumb pushes outwards, the wrist goes with it.
Again, I don't see anything wrong with the way you're holding it, so I wouldn't obsess over it.
I'm glad you're enjoying your studies. Have a great weekend.
My pleasure.
Hello danpatti. Because this is a visual technique, I don't really have anything else to offer verbally. How about you take a quick video of yourself and post it to YouTube, this way I can see what you're doing. You can set it so that only someone with a link can see (if you don't wish it to be public). You can either post the link here, or send it via email from the "Contact Us" link on the bottom-left corner of the website.
