Hohner Golden Melody
Hi,
I have been playing blues harmonica for almost 4 years now. I tried different harmonicas along the way, but by far my favorite is the Hohner Golden Melody. I love the way it feels and plays.
I still have a feeling that I should be playing a different more bluesy tuned harmonica because of all the reviews I have seen of people talking about the golden meody not being a harmonica for the blues because it should only be played for melodies. I find that the chords sound different, yeah, but sounds good to me...
Not sure why I feel bad as a blues harmonica player to play with a Golden Melody...
What are your thoughts on this subject?
Thanks
Seriously, though. Play what you like and don't worry.
That said, have you listened closely to how the chords sound on more traditionally tuned harps? If that sounds closer to the classic players – and if that's even what you care about – then it might be worth considering having your chords tuned differently.
The nice thing is, though, that if you really like everything about the Golden Melody but decided you wanted a different temperament, you could change it to better suit your desired sound.
Tuning takes patiences and care, but it gives you a lot of power over keeping your harps in the condition you want them to be in - and can save you money on replacing harps that go out of tune but still have usable reeds (i.e., not about to fail with flatness as the first symptom).
