hohner marine band

I have 2 harps with blown reeds ( one with 3 and one with 5 reed) . The question I have is should I buy reed plates and screws and repair these (I was thinking of cost ) or is it about the same just to buy new? . I have replaced reeds in lee oscars but the marines look like they could take some time and effort. Can you buy the screws in your local hardwre stores?
Hello Wahoo, good to hear from you.
If you own the traditional Hohner 1896 Marine Band harmonica (nailed together with brads), I would recommend replacing it with a new Hohner Marine Band Deluxe, and save your two used harmonicas for future donor parts. I have seen new MB Deluxe harmonicas in the $60-ish range on eBay.
If you already own the MB Deluxe, then I would recommend watching our Harp Tech Study #5: Replacing Reeds (listed under "New Equipment"), then decide if you want to tackle learning this invaluable skill set. If you decide not to take on this task at this time, then go to http://www.hohnershop.com/marine-band-deluxe-reed-plates/ and order the replacement plates at $45 per set. The entire process will be familiar to those who have swapped Lee Oscar reed plates.
Let us know how it goes ...
