Improv Study 1 Assignment 3
David,
Hope all is well. My question concerns assignment 3. If I understand your video correctly, we are to produce 5 different 12-bar choruses, each using a different chorus form, and each using a "new lick". My question regards the "new lick". So, for argument's sake let's suppose I use AAA, AAAf, AAB, AAfB, and ABAC. If I understand you correctly, the A will be a different lick in each chorus. This could theoretically be five different A licks from up to five different study songs. Is this correct? If so, then wouldn't that defeat the purpose of maintaining a sense of continuity throughout the song while changing things up with the fills and the B and C licks?
Thanks in advance,
Ace
Hello Ace. You are correct, the A will be a different lick in each chorus.
Yes, the lick can be five different "A" licks from up to five different study songs.
No, each chorus in the blues trends to have nothing to do with the other main "A" lick. Sometimes there can be thematic elements from chorus to chorus (this is cool when it happens), but generally speaking, each chorus is its own composition.
An important element of this lesson is in how the licks within the blues are usable in so many places... they're like Lego blocks, you can make so many things from them.
And yes, exactly, the fills tend to help make the song unique, and the fills are also some areas you can add thematic elements (though don't worry about making this the theme... it's just something that happens sometimes... that is, using fills that are similar within a song, to add some cohesion).
