Jam Goof
Almost like a confessional - need this to feel it's behind me. Yesterday's jam session ...........
So feeling overly confident (after a reasonable job on Big Boss Man with vocals), when the leader asks me if there's something I'd like to play, I say "how about a slow blues in D" so I can try (for the first time) to play the "big stick" chromatic. And away we go: it's going smoothly, keeping it fairly simple, loving the difference in the sound!! DUmb ass me then decides, hey get the diatonic for the horn lines comping - put the chrom down, grab the C harp (hey the chrom is in C, right?) and start to play, but it's sounding weird and I'm into struggle and survive mode. Then it hits me - I'm trying to play in 2nd position not 3rd because I want to work those bends at the lower end. **^^#*** Put down the C harp, grab the G for a pretty decent ending but by then I'm shattered. Good lesson - pay attention and don't get fancy until you can handle it!!!
Just needed to share with folks who I hope understand.
Not to mention how difficult it is to switch from a C chromatic in 3rd to a G diatonic in 2nd. If you want to dig into a instrumental with this combo.... "Blues for Rev. King" by George Smith
I feel your pain. I have made some goofs myself. My worst problem, besides holding the harp upside down, is forgetting words to songs. Of course, I just make stuff up, but the old hands in the audience always give me a hard time with it.
I never forget that lyric again after that!
