When I get the email from Blues Blast Magazine I always scan it on line, but when the lead interview is with a harp player, I always print out a hard copy to read and re-read at my leisure. The interview with Joe Filisko is great. I've read and seen videos of lots of interviews with Joe, and have heard him speak at SPAH (either in person, or at this year's virtual Convention), but everytime he speaks, he brings something new to the table. Joe is more than a great harmonica teacher. He's a National Treasure.
Joe did a session at this past year's SPAH which I really enjoyed. However, the most memorable thig was that he played with a small vegetable can held in place of a microphone. It offered a unique echo sound that I really liked. Up until I got a microphone and amp, I started playing that way to get accustom to holding a mic. I miss the sound and may have to break out my assortment of cans.

Brian: Sort of like Paul Oscher's particular brand of cardboard toilet paper roll insert (his story about trying to buy that particular motel's entire supply is a riot), Joe likes a specific brand and size of can. My own "tone tool" is a 7 oz. can that previously housed Ortega Fire Roasted Whole Green Chiles, with clear tape all the way around to protect the label. But I also have a 3 oz. can for travel! (Seriously, the can thing, i.e, just about any tin can with the lid off - and cleaned, of course, so you don't get soup in the reeds, can do some really fun things with your tone. And will make your audience smile. Joe's talk about his tin can for the 2020 virtual SPAH Convention was spot on.)
Thanks for posting. I was not aware of the magazine. I signed up.
