Line Out/Speaker Out
G'day Skip,
I have a Vibro Champ XD. I notice it has 2 jacks in back. 1 is marked 'line out', the other 'speaker out'. what is the difference here? does the 'line out' come from the preamp stage, bypassing the power stage?
on the subject of this 5w amp, i'm wondering how much speaker it could drive. do you think a pair of 10"s would be beyond it?
Thanks,
Dave
Hello Dave- Thanks for writing. The "speaker out" jack is a jack that will drive an additional speaker. In most amps, the internal speaker will work as well as any speaker plugged in to the "speaker out" jack. In some cases, the internal speaker will automatically disconnect, so all you hear is the speaker plugged in to the "speaker out".
The "line-out" jack will allow you to get your amp's sound directly in to the house PA, basically achieving the same result as micing the amp. Many line-outs do come from the preamp stage, but some (called "speaker-driven" line-outs) bleed a small amount of signal directly from the speaker itself.
Five watts will drive a pair of efficient speakers pretty well. A couple of lightweight alnico or ceramic 10s should sound good.

If the only out is a speaker out, say on a 5-watt amp, is there a way to run that into a PA or larger amp without blowing something up or ruining the sound?
Marcos- The traditional way would be to mic the amp, either into the house PA or into a larger amp. However, a line-out can be installed on any amp. Either way will work, but the line-out is handy and quick to set up at a gig.
If your amp has only a speaker jack, micing the amp into the PA is your only solution.
