Hi there,
I was just wondering if there are any lessons on lip blocking. I've heard a few pros and cons about both styles. I'm a newbie and still working on perfecting the single note.
Thanks,
Shari
Hello Shari. There are no lessons on puckering (also known as pursing) on the site. Tongue Blocking is the primary embouchure used for playing the harmonica... down the road you can experiment with puckering for special effects, such as double tonguing and triple tonguing.
If you want to experiment with it, just make sure to drop your jaw and lower the middle and back of your tongue so that you have a resonant chamber (fish-face in other words). This will help to give you a warmer tone.
To achieve an even bigger sound, and a more relaxed embouchure, try placing your lips around three holes (1-3 for example) and then tilting the face of your harmonica down slowly until you achieve the 2 hole only (the harmonica will title about 33 degrees). You would then play in this titled manner all of the time (I do this when I tongue block as well). Experiment... see what works for you.
