LOA program similarities to Martial Arts program?
David:
I have studied several different martial arts over the past 25 years and noticed a lot of similarities between the LOA program and a martial arts program. Your different color level harmonica holes roughly mimic belt color ranks. The exercises and testing (testing fees) have some similarities. Some of the study habits even draw parallels. Did you pattern any of the LOA program after a martial arts program?
I also notice harmonica teachers and their approaches and styles seem to be like martial arts teachers (like Zen masters?).
Thanks
Brian
Hello Brian. Yes, the visual element of the holes of the harmonica are based on the martial arts belt system. The testing fee is there so that I don't have to raise the monthly tuition for everyone to match the amount of extra work it requires of me, this way only those that do the testing pay for the added work (monthly subscription has stayed the same since we launched in 2009). The idea of dividing the curriculum is just a way to navigate the large amount of material on the site. I wanted to provide a clear-cut path through the material, in a comprehensive way, and hopefully motivate them through the process (like belts do). So, yup, you got it right.
