LOA Testing #3 Question
Dave
In the submission for accompaniment playing study 3 you say "play one chorus per hole of the harmonica, for the first six holes" .
Does a chorus = 12 bars ?
If so, do you want 6 x 12 bars for a total of 72 bars recorded?
Sorry for so many questions
Tom
Hello Dave,
I'll join this thread since I also have a question about LOA 3.
There are 5 solo harmonica examples I can choose from. Would you recommend learning to play all of them without errors first and only then proceed with the exam and the next level? Or is it fine to play one of them well and the others just more or less ok? In other words, should I choose the example that is the hardest for me?
I've noticed on previous levels that even if I was not playing everything perfectly, the next level gave me opportunity to work further on the same techniques and ideas. So I'm wondering if it's actually better to move to the next level quicker rather than staying on the same excercises for a long time.
Hello nahrihra. I recommend you learn and play the ones you think sound cool. If one of them doesn't sound cool to you, then skip it. If they all sound cool, which I assume is the case (they do to me!), then do what you said, "play one of them well and the others just more or less ok."
Yes, the material will be used, in some fashion, in later lessons, you're right. I think it would be a good idea to learn the material 85% and move on. The material you really like, get even better, and the material you don't care for as much, maybe 70% (just to gain the technique).
To be honest I think that when David was thinking on the lessons and at the time he was recording he was thinking about how we would react to exercises and study songs and had some fun with it..
LoA 2 Study song, I'm pretty sure he said at some point "this lick gonna sit you on your ass" and he smiled at it!
Well it did!!
Then also Loa2 solo harmonica he says to pick "the one that we like the most for evaluation" and guess wich one I like the most? The one that is full of slaps that we just learn how to do it..
He is clearly teasing us man and having fun with it..
Then at some point he also says on camera something like "I like to give you a little hard time" and smiles at it again!
At times he also look at the camera and goes "hmmm" and smile and then nothing and keep filming.. at that time you already know what he is thinking and you know again that he is trying to sit you on your ass once again..
I think that those little smile and stuff are funny because I don't know if it was on purpose or not but it definitely makes us want to make it and push forward. It gives us a feeling that we want to prove him that we can do it and makes us busy on a good way.
Also since you are talking about having some error and moving forward... Well in my opinion I think that he also know that we aren't capable of nailing it all when he give us the material to study and that he did it so he have something holding us. A teacher who does it all easy it's not a teacher in my opinion and looks like he have the same thinking because he does have some stuff to relax, some to push and some to sit us on our ass. So the sit on our ass stuff I'm really thankful for having it because it creates a challenge that we feel the need get over it. But if I don't have much time I skip it a bit but you will realize at some point that you are better and you will go back and do it.. Or like me I'm saving some so when I reach the point of not feeling to study a song or something I will get on those. Because if you are like me soon or late you are gonna need a break and those stuff that we left at 70% is gonna be what we are looking for at that time to sit back and relax a bit instead of stopping for a while and quit.
Anyway thats how I see it ..
Hello Tom, you don't have to say sorry... I'm your teacher, I'm happy to help.
