Me or the harmonica?
Hi. Is there a trick or method to 'prove' a harmonica reed is working as it should? As a new player I have no idea if I have a faulty harp or if it is me. I bought a Lee Oscar in A and the 2 draw wouldn't sound at all no matter how gently or strongly I drew air through it. I then decided to be brave and adjust the gap by opening it about the width of the reed tip, and then gently closing the gap and trying it at each variation. I did get it to sound but it is fluffy and not clear at all, plus I have to draw so gently it is a quarter of the air flow of the reeds either side of it....just to get any note at all out of it
I then bought a new Marine Band in A because I assumed the problem was with the Oscar harmonica. But that has a similar problem.
I know 2 draw is a problem for new players but I can play my C Marine Band clearly and without odd noises.
Thanks.
Dave.
Hello Dave
- Is there anyone within your "inner circle" of friends who you would consider a competent harmonica player, that can test the instrument for you?
- With a couple of close up photographs (attached to this forum page) of your #2 draw reed and blow reed (you'll have to disassemble the harmonica to get a good shot of the blow reed profile/offset), I should be able to troubleshoot this mystery for you.
- Save the couch for a nice nap.

Hi Dave. I was having the same problem. Here is a technique that I read somewhere that worked for me. Try sitting on a couch. Now bend your neck and head backwards over the top of the couch and give the 2 draw a try. It worked for me first time and every time since. Now try to replicate that position of your throat without bending over backwards. Might take a few trys but it should work. I thought I was going crazy until I saw this technique. Kevin
