Melodica Anyone?
Anyone here play melodica?
On a whim I decided to get one, in particular to use as a teaching tool, and also so that when practicing harp I can just keep it in my lap, rather than getting up and going back and forth over to the piano.
It's a Hohner "Student 32." Nifty little thing. And I picked it up from Rockin' Ron's Music in San Diego. If you don't know, even if it's something not on his website, if Ron has a dealer agreement with a manufacturer, he can get for you anything from that manufacturer. After emailing Ron and setting up an invoice from his end, the melodica was drop-shipped directly from Hohner USA. And delivered fast! And as always, between street price and free shipping, Ron always comes through. No need to ever order from a big mega-on-line source, or go to a big-box music store.
It's a really fun little instrument. Just one thing, though: When holding it and blowing through the long hose that Hohner supplies with it, I look like one of those "Ood" creatures from "Dr. Who." So it may be a while before I pull it out on the bandstand.
Here in Japan, they are often used as the musical instrument to teach music to grade school kids. As to their use by pros, I have no videos to post but I've seen them used both live and on TV (well Youtube video of a TV show). So, they are played live.
I don't know his name but the keyboard player for Charlie Hunter in the early 2010's used one on a couple of songs when I saw him play at Kuumbwa in Santa Cruz. Also, the previous band leader for The Late Show, John Batiste, used one a number of times on the show (search YouTube and you'll find a bunch of videos of him playing the melodica).
