Memorising Licks from study songs for improvisation
Hi David,
At the moment I am going through all the study songs and picking out my favourite licks so that I can improvise with the chorus forms (Reason being I dont think Ive given this much time previously so am trying to catch up).At the moment I'm picking out quite a few licks from each song and getting quite an assortment. However the problem lies in that there are quite a few to memorise.
So my question is, how many licks would you recommend from each song, and then is it a case of building on those licks as you become more advanced.
I feel like i'm tying myself in knotts and spending a lot of time trying to memorise each and every lick.
Hope this makes sense,
Kind Regards,
Paul
Yah, pick your favorite licks, but just two licks total per week. You'll want to pick a cool V-IV-I lick as well... and a cool Turnaround lick too... all from the same song. This way you get practice with those specific licks at the same time. You're no bother by the way :-)
Morning Paul. I would shoot for two licks a week (20m a day practice... 10m each lick). When applying the Chorus Form process as I describe in the lessons, by the time you play the lick in all of the CF options, and variations (moving it up an octave, fragmentation, etc.) you'll be chewing on that lick easily 50 times before you're done. By the end of the week those to licks would have been played 100's of times and they'll be in your longterm memory, hopefully appearing when you need them. Change jam track each day to keep it fresh.
