Mic for MacBook Air
What's a good mic to plug into my MacBook? Thanks,
I second jophistan's enthusiam for the Shure MV5. I picked one up a few years ago as an "introductory" mic for recording on my iPhone, and later used it for various things on my Mac laptop.
Since then, I've picked up a multi-channel audio interface, through which I can run harp mics, vocal mics, backing track sources, etc. But the MV5 still comes in handy when I'm traveling, and need to check into a Zoom conference or harp lesson via my iPad. The MV5, its little included stand, and the iPad make for a very compact system.
I had this same question when I realised that the built-in mic on my MacBook Air barely picked up what I was playing and sounded pretty awful. I was a bit overwhelmed by all the options available, especially as a newbie with no idea about all the technical qualities, etc. I did watch the introductory videos on here and learned a lot from them, but didn't want to get too advanced at this point. I found a Shure MV5 usb mic that seemed to fit the bill at a reasonable price so I got that and have been addicted to using it ever since during my practise sessions and recordings. You can plug your headphones straight into it and monitor what your playing easily - for my novice ears, it performs great and even looks stylish to boot.
