Obsessing over 3/4 draw!
I've been busting a gut trying to figure out how to play 'Busy Man' (found in Aki Kumar's submission number 5, part 4 - 'Joe Filisko song 2, as well as on IC Special).
I think it goes like this: 2, 123 (wah), 1, 2", 1, x, 3'/4.
...but I'm struggling with the 3'/4 (the song starts at 1:30 and the first 3'/4 is at about 1:33). It has a very dirty sound to it which I can't replicate at all - I can get the usual thick 3/4 sound, which is great in a Chicago context, but this is somehow different - almost 'dry' if you see what I mean. It completely suits the lyrics, sounding effortful and painful - a real wheeze and last gasp feel. Could it be it's even got some 5 draw in it?
I guess it's down to Joe's technique though (and the variation in dynamics even within that short lick is amazing)! Help! And any ideas how he gets that dirty sound out of it?
As a side note, thanks for the latest 'grooves' video - it's a great idea to have a group of pros demonstrate and talk through the different grooves and it's definitely helped fill a gap in my knowledge. Fantastic stuff.
...anyway, I'd better back to that 3/4 obsession I've got...
You're correct, it's a 3/4 bent... hit hard. Bend with a little more force since you're bending two notes at the same time.
