Pitches in Half Steppin' chorus 2
Hi David,
In 2nd chorus bars 1-4 there is repeating lick notated in the PDF as 3 3' 2 3' 3. It's also one of the licks selected for the chorus forms study.
It sounds to me that recording of the song does not match the sheet music. It sounds like the lick mentioned above is played more like:
3' 3'' 2 3' 3
I confirmed it with Transcribe at 20% of the tempo and piano.
I tried to play notated version (checking pitchs with piano first) but it sounds much better and more natural to me starting with 3' 3'' (like the recording) instead of 3 3'.
Am I right or I don't hear it right?
Side note: This song is the hardest so far. Been working on it for almost 2 months already and I'm only just starting to put full 12 bar chunks together. Lots of satisfaction though.
Kai.
Great, thank you very much.
Hmmmmmm... I dunno man! I'm using virtualpiano.net. Using their key layout, the original notation from the pickup to the IV chord is:
EeweE EeweEeE rEwEr Er Ery ryr
but you're saying it should change to:
EeweE EeweEeE Eewer Er Ery ryr
I prefer the first (original) one. And here's why:
This chorus is A B/A1 C chorus form, the A lick is first wants to be counted as "and-four-and-one-and-two". But for A1 its like it gets stuck and try, try, try again: "and-four-and-one-and ... three-and ... one-and-two...". Since the bold notes are related they should be the same pitches, as in: "rEw Er Er Ery ryr". In this case the E is a leading tone to the r (3' leading to 3).
Though the first r may initially sound wrong, that's because we are currently on the IV, and it's actually played as part of the transition to the I chord lick. Note that "EeweE" is what was played over the I chord as we changed to the IV chord, because those notes match the IV. Now we need to be playing notes to match the change back to the I, and so "rEwEr".
That r may be dipped so that it doesn't stand out so much - when the lick was played twice in part A of the chorus form, it was actually dipped. Maybe that's what you're hearing.
Nice work Kai, I hear it as well. I'll make the change to the notation. I hear 3' 3'' 2 3'' 3 (whole step bend on the second to last note), but you checked that note as well? If you did check it with transcribe and piano, then I'll keep it as your wrote, 3'. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
