Practicing when you can't
Wed, 12/07/2011 - 09:16
Hi David,
So I'm going to be on trains, planes, and automobiles for the next few days. In other words, I won't be able to practice for about a week. What are some things I could do in the meantime? Can you recommend some books or explain how to actively listen to music? Any other ideas would help. It seems like only missing a few days sets me back too far.

It's important to listen to great music as much as possible... it's like hearing great speakers of our language... it helps us to appreciate what it is to be articulate and it no doubt rubs off on us in many levels.
Two days... perfect...
Take all of the songs you've learned to this point... and maybe some songs you'll be studying soon... and for each song...
Listen one time each for the following...
1) Drums - Try to beat box (in your own way) the rhythm being played... take note when it changes and hear what it does musically.
2) Bass - Try to hum the bass line... take note when it changes and hear what it does musically.
3) Guitar(s) - Try to hum the guitar part... take note when it changes and hear what it does musically.
4) Keyboard - Ditto
