Pulls - Beginning With Joe - Pluck, Blob, Spit Or Puff?
Hey David with the teaching session with Joe you are working with him on his first Pull.
You are starting with the 4th hole slap and then from there getting the pull technique.
I can do a tongue slap on the 1, 2 and 3rd hole and have them blocked with the left side (blade) of my tongue and have the 4th note sound great. So far so good. You want us to then stick out more tongue and then cover, in this case 1,2,3 and the 4th hole that was sounding with the slap. Got it. Now it's the Pull.
Is the pull a inhale so I would be inhaling for the 4th hole slap following up with a inhale Pull? I know you are showing him a pluck technique or almost a spit. Is the spitting or the pluck a exhale?
I love Stevie Ray Vaughan guitar sound and he would do palm muting intermixed with his single notes to get a muffled shuffle. Is this what we are trying to do?
So after my good 4th hold slap. (4th hole is sounding to the right), I should put more tongue out and then inhale?
I know you do not want us to repeat the same note, e.g. 2d 2d 3d 3d 4d 4d 5b 5b. But use the pull.
I am little confused if it is truly a spit or a pluck or a puff, wouldn't these be a exhale?
You also mention putting more tongue and blobbing it for a practice feel and then Joe said that I should take my tongue off. And I believe you said that was ok. I am little confused if for a feel I blob it but have the tongue off?
I also just viewed the pull review with you and Joe and you were covering again the 4th hole drill. You are going over the pluck. If I am doing a 4th hole series of draws and then doing a series of 4th hole blows using the pull technique, does the 4th hole draws always utilize a inhaling and vice versa a 4th hole blow pull would be always exhaling using the pluck technique.
The drill sounds like an accordian pulling in and exhaling. I am trying to do just the 4th hole slap then cover the holes 1,2,3, 4 and then do a pull. I am questioning from here if I need a plucking or a spitting sound would it always be a inhale feel? Also, is there a puffing movement which would be a short burst of air going out expecially if we are trying to trampoline off of a bent tongue as you have shown with Ryan?
I am stuck with the plucking, spitting and puffing part of the pull. I should be able to do exercise 2.1 better.
Thank You.
Will
We do this technique both inhaling or exhaling. The rule of thumb is that if your between two downbeat draw notes, the pull is a draw. If you're between two downbeat blow note, the pull is a draw. If you go from a draw downbeat note to a blow downbeat note, and vice-versa, it's your choice.
So, in the passage you mention, the 2 2 3 3 4 4... the upbeat notes (second of each series) would be draw pulls. For the two 5+'s at the end, you can use a blow or draw pull for the last 5+, as I just stated (since it goes to a draw next).
Plucking... spitting... all have to do with getting coverage of all the holes for the pull, just like you stated. The goal is to cover all of the holes... literally filling the opening of your mouth (flesh of tongue touches flesh of inside lips) so that when you remove your tongue (move it back) you'll get a nice breaking of the suction created.
So, this is the scientific description. The easy one... stick your tongue out before you draw it back for the pull... it gives it a little more snap.
