Reed Substitution
I have several Seydel 1847 harps that have #5 draw reeds that have gone flat and will not respond to retuning efforts, I have an extra 1847 "B" flat with a bad reed and I could cannibalize this harp for the reeds if neccesary. What I need to know is if any of these reeds would be a substitute for the #5 draw reed in a 1847 "A" harp? Thanks!
Thanx Joe,
In addition, if you have an extra Eb harp, you could use the 3 (draw) ... if you have n extra High G, you could also use the 3+ (blow) reed.
Good Luck!
Kinya
Dear Kynia,
When you have to substitute a reed, what do you use to install the new reed? The same rivet? or use a screw in place of it?
What's your opinion about using screws in place of rivets to intall the reeds?
Sorry about my english!
Thank's

Hello Everton157
I am not a fan of rivets. I have always preferred bolts. Check out my article on reed replacement that appeared in the June 2004 issue of Harmonica Sessions: http://archive.harmonicasessions.com/jun04/h-workbench.html
Let us know how it goes.
Your Harpsmith,
Kinya
Dear Kinya,
Thanks for the information.
I'd like to ask you another thing: Do you know the specification of material used by Hohner to produce the reeds for Marine Band Deluxe? (I know it is brass, but there are many types of it, depending on the quemical alloy) Which International Standard for the reed material?
Everton
Hi Everton,
That my friend, is a carefully guarded secret ... sort of like the Coca Cola syrup, and Colonel Sanders' KFC recipe of eleven herbs and spices.
One of the reasons that I hope the reorganizing efforts of Harrison Harmonicas will be successful, is to populate the world of quality harmonicas with their remarkable reeds.
Your Harpsmith,
Kinya
Sorry, dear Kynia. I suposed that you would know the reference of the material (brass) for reeds. Thanks for the information!!!
Yours faithfully,
Everton
5 blow in the Bb harp is D, which will work in the 5 draw slot on the A harp.
