A question about R.J. Mischo's playins starts in the closing section of your interview: the lick he plays starts with a bent 4 draw, but he's doing something to take the rough edge off it. The bent 4 draw sounds pretty harsh when I try to copy the lick (in fact, it sounds like a squealing brake on a bicycle) - is he glissing into it? I can tell there's another sound before the note, but I can't work out what it is - it definitely sounds more polished than the bent 4 draw by itself.

I'll take a listen. Give me the video name and timecode so I can be sure I'm listening to the same lick you are.

Thanks - it's the 'Closing' video in your interview and it's the first lick he plays. Starts at around 0.23.

Answer

He plays a 3 draw pull (holes 1-3), a 4' and then 4. He's not doing any treatment on the 4'. Guessing from your description you may be getting a gurgle sound on the 4'... this is where the back of the tongue is close to the roof of your mouth at the soft pallet... which creates gurgling sound, similar to snoring or ch' in the hebrew language (such as Jochim), sounding similar to the rolled spanish R (but that uses the tip of the tongue... we're speaking of the back). If this is the case you'll want to hump your tongue up more forward in the mouth, using more of the middle of the tongue, apposed to the back.

Thanks

Thanks for your help on that - it was the 3 draw pull I missed. Knew there was something else going on, but couldn't figure out what it was.
